Friedrich Kiesler
We live through correalism

It may be the range and complexity of Friedrich Kiesler’s output that has meant that despite the recognition he won during his lifetime his fame today does not match that of contemporaries such as Mies van der Rohe or Le Corbusier. Friedrich Kiesler was an architect. His works and his theories were radical and revolutionary.

“Form does not follow function, function follows vision, vision follows reality.”

Although during his lifetime his exhibition projects, competition entries, publications and writings earned him recognition beyond specialist circles, Kiesler built little.

Neither did any of his furniture designs ever go into volume production. Perhaps this was because designs such as party Lounge, the Bed Couch or the Correalistic Instrument and Correalistic Rocker were too far ahead of their time in their conceptual and theoretical approach, their mobility and flexibility.

The energy and vision that must have driven Friedrich Kiesler can still be sensed in his furniture. It was a fascination with these qualities that inspired Wittmann to revisit Kiesler’s furniture designs in a Re-Edition; thereby enabling the public to discover the work of his important Austro-American personality.
